Igor Stravinsky - Le sacre du printemps

In this 1960 recording, Stravinsky conducts his very own masterpiece, Le sacre (premiered for the first time in 1913, in Paris). I think it is the best version there is, full of excitement and mind-blowing energy. Bernstein's NYPO 1958 recording is also notable, but this is what you must feed your ears with. You will not fail to notice, The Rite of Spring is very much ahead of its time.

«We intend with these works executed by those unscathed by artistic culture, in which, the mimesis has little role in the way that the artist draws everything (subject, choice of material, the creative process, ways of expressing an idea, rhythms, etc) from their own depths and, unlike intellectuals, not from the conventions of classical or fashionable art.»Jean Dubuffet

John Cage - Roaratorio: An Irish Circus on Finnegans Wake (1979)

Well, what to say about this? A masterpiece, and it is not at all an exaggeration. Mastermind of John Cage, madcap text of James Joyce and the lure of Uilleann pipes blossom into a (rather much green) clover dream. Here are the liner notes by John Cage himself, which explains it all.

Akira Rabelais - Spellewauerynsherde (2004)

the music on spellewauerynsherde is as unusual as its title which, redefined, reads ‘spell.wavering.shard.’―‘spell’ alluding to the effect cast by its hypnotic incantatory voices, ‘wavering’ their shivering quality once filtered through Rabelais’ Argeïphontes Lyre software and ‘shard’ their fragmentary character. After Rabelais discovered forgotten tape recordings of traditional Icelandic a cappella singing, he found himself so transfixed by the female voices’ heartbreaking sound that he decided to digitally weave them into pulsating drones. By exhuming these phantom, siren-like voices and digitally reconfiguring them, Rabelais’ haunting recording straddles medieval and modern eras. Don’t think that he smothers the remnants with distracting treatments, though. His approach is far subtler; in some cases, voices seemingly stand unadorned of any added embellishment. (source)

Zoltán Pongrácz – 144 Sounds: Electronic Music (1982)

I seem to be obsessed with Hungarian electronic music in 70s and 80s. If it were recorded today, the sound of this album could have been regarded a bit raw considering the advanced opportunities of electronic music production of our day but primitivity of an art work cannot be considered to decrease the value of it. I am not saying these because I expect people to forgive the primitivity of such 'oldies' by saying 'Oh yeah, it's from 80s afterall.' In fact, what I think is that there is nothing to forgive in those old records. On the contrary, they can and must be esteemed on account of all their primitivity and rawness, not thinking that their oldness is an excuse for their immaturity. Otherwise, music, like many others, would fall prey to the fast moving consumption of capitalism.
